The Jimmy Pike Scholarship honours the life and work of Jimmy Pike by supporting emerging and established Aboriginal artists from Western Australia to participate in an intensive printmaking residency at Edith Cowan University, Perth City Campus. The program ran annually from 2010 to 2019, and the scholarship will return in 2027.
Each year, two or three artists travel to Perth for a two-week residency, where they work in a fully equipped printmaking studio, learn new techniques, strengthen existing skills, and engage in meaningful cultural exchange with ECU students and staff. The program has been described as highly successful and continues to grow in impact and reptutation.

The scholarship celebrates Pike's belief in shared learning, cultural exchange, and the power of art to connect people. It enables artists to expand their practice, and bring fresh skills and inspiration back to their home Communities.

The Trust awards scholarships to two or three Aboriginal artists to attend an intensive printmaking residency at the School of Communications and Arts, Edith Cowan University (ECU), Perth Campus, over approximately two weeks.
The program grew from Jimmy Pike's own relationship with the university, and it commemorates the way his career began: an artist discovering printmaking in a fully equipped studio, with skilled people alongside him.

the work produced during the residency
All artworks created during the residency remain the property of the artists. A portfolio is prepared and returned to their home art centre, and artists may also bring previous works to exhibit. Work may be sold at the final showing, and neither ECU nor the Trust takes commission. Prints are retained at ECU for historical record and may be used for future exhibitions or promotion of the scholarship.

These inclusions ensure that artists can fully immerse themselves in the residency without financial burden, allowing them to focus on creative exploration and skill development.
Scholarship recipients are responsible for any other expenses.

what we ask of you
Scholarship recipients must agree to:
Attend the ECU Perth campus from 8:30am to 4pm each weekday of the residency, taking full advantage of the facilities and programs on offer.
Give wholehearted commitment to the residency - the scholarship may be withdrawn if an artist is unable to do so.
Understand that the scholarship may be terminated, with an immediate return home, in the event of anti-social behaviour while in Perth.
Note that the Trust and the University waive any claim to commission on work sold through the residency exhibition or any later exhibition - your work and its proceeds are yours.
Understand that the Trust pays the costs listed in "What's Included" above, and that all other personal needs remain the recipient's responsibility.
